ACHERONTAS

If you find yourself near Parga, Acheron River is a must see. It’s close to Glyki village, about 20km from Parga. The last five kilometers of the river are navigable and allow tourist routes by boat during summer months, in a charming path between trees.

 

GATES OF HADES

A river leads to the underworld. Homer’s epic poems come back to life. According to mythology, Acheron is the river of sorrow, the door to Hades, the passage to the other world.

 

NECROMANTEION OF ACHERON

Kassope or Cassope was an ancient Greek city in Epirus, located in the hills of the village Kamarina. It occupies a magnificent and remote site overlooking the Ionian sea, the Amvrakikos Gulf, the fertile lands to the south and slopes of the Zalongo mountain to the north.

 

PERPETUAL DANCE – ZALONGO

The “Dance of Zalongo” was a mass suicide of women from Souli and their children during the Souliote War of 1803, near the village of Zalongo in Epirus, in the Ottoman Empire. It took place on December 16th, 1803.

Undeniably, one of the absolute attractions in the area is the Ziros lake. Following a magnificent route through plane trees, oaks and pines, you will encounter a beautiful alpine scenery surrounding the still waters of the lake.

ANCIENT NIKOPOLIS

Nikopolis was build after the victory of the first Roman emperor, Octavian Augustus, in the battle of Actium against Mark Antony and Cleopatra, in 31 BC. It is the border city of the end of the Hellenistic area and the beginning of Roman rule. Don’t forget to visit the Nikopolis museum too. It includes a collection of architectural parts, a collection of sculptures from the area of Nikopolis, marble tombs from the cemetery of the wider region of Nikopolis and hundreds of other exhibits.

ROMAN AQUEDUST OF NIKOPOLIS

At the northest end of the Louros valley, near the village of Agios Georgios, north of Filippiada, dominates the Roman aqueduct of ancient Nikopolis. It traverses a distance of approximately 50 km.
